The summer months are some of the busiest months in the year. The kids are out of school, the lawn needs mowed, and there are festivals and zoos and other fun activities for adults and children alike. Living in small town Michigan, it can often feel like there isn’t enough to do, but there are hidden gems in every community. This list focuses on five fun things to do this summer in Decatur and its neighboring areas.
1.) Fred Russ Forest Park, Decatur MI
Are you a nature lover? Does hiking and exploring mother nature’s gifts sound like the day for you? Then Fred Russ Forest Park is the place to be this summer. Located within the Fred Russ research park (which itself is 580 acres!) is this 13 acre nature park. It features amenities such as a canoe landing and Children’s play equipment. This park also boasts 4 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing trails. The well groomed cross-country skiing trails range from easy to intermediate! This wonderful park is located on 20379 Marcellus Highway, Decatur, MI 49045. Bring the whole family (that means the dogs too) for a day of fun in the beauty of nature!
2.) The Hayloft, Decatur MI
Adventuring in the summer sun always leaves the family hungry, so why not bring them by The Hayloft? The Hayloft opened for the summer season on May 10th this year. If you’ve never been this little ice cream parlor located on M-51 in Decatur has some of the best-tasting ice cream. The ice cream is fresh and has no high fructose corn syrup. Not a big sweets person? That’s okay! The Hayloft also has pizzas, burgers, and even salads. There’s a little something for everyone! And if you live in Decatur and just wanna beat the heat with a little treat (see all those rhymes?) then you can get delivery! Their website has all kinds of good information on their business but we here at Phix recommend going down to see them! The atmosphere is wonderful and the people are so nice!
3.) Lake of The Woods, Decatur MI
A forest isn’t what you’re looking for, and you’re on a diet to get that summer bod? Then let us present to you Lake of The Woods. This area is a beautiful lake paradise, boasting 300 acres with over 280 homes (both full time residents and seasonal). The lake of the wood boasts two recreational campgrounds, one which is an RV park if you’re from out of town! There is a public access as well as a boat launch, so don’t be afraid to dip your toes in the water this summer!
4.) Kids Paradise Playground, Paw Paw MI
Alice Cooper said it best “school’s out for summer”. Sometimes it can be hard to keep the little ones entertained, but Paw Paw has a solution that’s a hop, skip, and a jump away from Decatur. This playground features a pavilion within eyeshot of the kids’ wooden play structure. There are swings, a sandbox, and fields for some good old fashioned football and baseball. There are also grills, because we all know nothing makes a child hungrier than playing in the summer sun! This is a super affordable way to tucker the kids out when they have all that pent up energy!
5.) Oak Cove Resort, Lawrence MI
Maybe you aren’t from the area but you have family here, or maybe you just need a getaway - somewhere peaceful. Look no further than Lawrence, Michigan’s Oak Cove Resorts. This historic resort is on 16 acres of wooded land and boasts a sandy beach that is 500’! The lodge itself was built in 1900 and is decorated with an eclectic flair. With four houses and seven cottages there's room for the whole family. Do you like eating wha you catch from the lake? Good news is that Oak Cove resort will cook it as long as you clean it, giving you more time to relax by the heated pool, or inside our air conditioned cabin. If those selling points aren’t enough, the reservation comes with 18 free holes of golf, as well as access to the Volleyball courts, the paddle boats, kayaks, and much more to keep you entertained. And don’t worry millennials, there’s free wifi. This fantastic resort opens in early June and stays open through Labor Day.
